Designed for the 1954 season, the Mercedes-Benz W 196 R met all the requirements of the new CSI (International Sports Commission) Grand Prix formula: Displacement of 750 cc with or 2500 cc without compressor, free choice of fuel, a race distance of 300 kilometres or at least three hours. This "Silver Arrow" was a masterpiece in 14 copies.

This kit was hand-built and finished with the utmost care in IXO's workshops. The use of a high-precision digital scan of the original car has made it possible to reproduce every detail of the original car as accurately as possible. The Mercedes-Benz W196 R was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Fritz Nallinger. Due to its streamlined shape, it was capable of high speeds. The W196 R was built fourteen times, including the prototype. From the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring onwards, they switched to a version with free-standing wheels, also known as a monoposto. On a technical level, the car was built to the highest quality of the time and featured, for example, a trellis frame, torsion-bar suspension, swing-arm suspension and turbo-cooled duplex drum brakes. The 290 hp cars were driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. The two achieved nine victories from twelve Grand Prix races.
