The Sd.Kfz 234 Puma was a German heavy armoured vehicle of World War II. The first prototypes of the vehicle were built in 1943 and series production continued between 1943 and 1945, ending with the production of about 510 vehicles. The Sd.Kfz 234 was powered by a Tatra 103 engine with 220 hp. The armament was - depending on the version - a cannon cal. 20 mm, cannon cal. 50 or 75 mm and a single machine gun MG42 cal. 7,92 mm.
The Sd.Kfz 234 was developed as a new basic reconnaissance vehicle for the Wehrmacht. It was largely based on the chassis of the Sd.Kfz 231 (8-wheeler), but had a completely new - more powerful - engine and in later versions a reinforced main armament. The new vehicle had a very good off-road capability and a significantly higher top speed than the Sd.Kfz 231 (8-wheeler). Several versions of this vehicle were produced in series. Chronologically, the first version was Sd.Kfz 234/1, which had only one KwK 38 gun of 20 mm calibre as main armament. In September 1943 the production of the version Sd.Kfz 234/2 started, which was already armed with the KwK 39 L/60 cannon cal. 50 mm in a fully armoured and rotating turret. Later, the version Sd.Kfz 234/3, armed with the 75 mm cannon KwK 37 L/24, which served as an infantry support vehicle, was created. The last version was the Sd.Kfz 234/4, armed with a 75 mm calibre PaK 40 L/46 cannon. Sd.Kfz 234 of all versions served until the end of the Second World War mainly in the Panzer divisions of the Wehrmacht on the eastern and western fronts.
